Following is brief from the gps committee with how they hope to run the events this year, come along join in and see if you can get some PB,s
Categories-
250m short course
500m
Nm
1hr
Alpha 500
The series is to run year round (once per month?) to be done on forecast basis (permits allowing). As opposed to slalom there are other areas that are keen to be involved so focus would be to plan events around prevailing conditions (no research done for below) and variety locations such as-
Broadwater- 250m (tide?, direction?)
vic point speed bank- 500m (low tide, SE Feb-Apr)
wellington point eastern side- 500m, Nm (high tide, SE Feb-Apr)
wellington point eastern bank- 500m (high tide, W June-August)
wellington point northern bank- alpha, 1hr, Nm (low/high tide, NE Sept-Jan)
Lota creek- 500m (low tide, N Sept-Dec)
manly- alpha, 1hr, Nm (high tide, SE Feb-Apr)
Caloundra- 250m (mid tide, SE Feb-Apr)
cootharaba- Nm, 1hr (low/high tide, NE/SE Sept-Apr), Charlie may be happy to assist or done on the saturday of the annual cootharaba get together
Immediate omissions have been:
Wellington Point Western Bank NE- runoff zone into swimming area
Thompsons Beach (high tide)- signed swimming area
Manly NE- to avoid running across shipping channel
Daily organisation to include-
Race Director
Ideally the availability of a rescue boat in the vicinity
Race fee to cover costs of boat if used and bbq/drinks
Nomination of 2 timekeepers with availability of tracks to 3rd party (simon?) to check at discretion
Clearly defined course area and time restrictions (ie 1230-1630)
GPS would be the primary measuring tool as it saves manpower, if a competition is decided beacon to beacon or long course surely a waypoint system can be put into calculations.
The idea is to build a competitive series from the bottom up with champions that are great across a variety of conditions and categories, not just flat water kamikaze's. We also want to encourage sportsmanship and encourage/assist other sailors to be involved, by raising the standard of the whole fleet we all improve.
Wind limit 15 knots, or to eliminate wind arguments any 2 sailors obtaining 10sec above 27?knots. Wind minimum not reached no results from the day are counted.
250 & 500m is awarded on average of 2 best runs to eliminate lucky gust.
Clarification on distance and waypoint gps measuring/software analysis in regards to point to point if any such event run.
Under the proposal below I would say any all of the fleets would be very competitive with any sailor being able to win on any day. I think the fact that it is same piece of water, same day and a variety of possible challenges is very important as it removes any gear advantage that may exist- the day might be set as a Nm or alpha or 1hr challenge in which case speed boards or less competent sailors on slalom boards will have no advantage.
